After the hyperventilation is a breath holding contest, and after that, there's one final breath in. The breathing isn't just hyperventilation, as your source seems to allude. They both mention the increase in the PH levels of your blood, and Wim claims this to be the reason he can withstand the cold.įor what it's worth, Wim Hof's philosophy is to become more in tune with the endocrine system. It's still unclear how his breathing method (or hyperventilation in general) helps him withstand the cold. Yeah, using Wim Hof as a source was definitely unwise on my part. Would reccomend if you're experienced with your meditation practices. There's some physiology aspects going on with the breathing and the cold showers which is why I think becomingtheiceman is becoming more popular. When you are holding your breath is kindda like being focused on the breath in a different way. I do find it helps with cold resistance and a stress reliever when you are holding your breath for a minute. I think the breathing is quite different from a normal mediation practice and I usually do it before meditating in the morning and before a cold shower. You trigger your bodys own thermostat and you begin to learn to control it and I think that's where this practice becomes special because you're learning to control your stress, and thoughts and all that jazz. I've done them on and off since highschool as well as meditating but but nothing is as effective as taking a 3-5 min cold exposure frequently. I was totally in the moment and never truly realized it until I read about Wim, and started taking ice baths and cold showers often, a few months ago. When I first did one, I went in and had shortness of breath and a big stress reaction within seconds.Īfter a minute, I relaxed and sat there for 5 mins, just stunned at how my body is reacting to this unusual coldness. I can remember not knowing about Wim Hof in highschool and just reading about taking ice baths to reduce inflammation. I've had depression ever since and it triggers when my knee gives out on me. It's rather a silly issue to be dramatic about, but the way it happened the first time, was by impact and very traumatic. Meditation Pics - for meditation-related images.
